Understanding Financial Reports - Part 1
Financial statements are a valuable tool to determine the health of your business. Banks and other lenders will ask for copies before lending to be sure they are making a wise loan. Reading and understanding financial statements is important for anyone who owns a business, is responsible for the bookkeeping of a business or serves on a board of directors.
In this session, Nancy Pasternack, Foster School of Business, University of Washington, walks us through just what goes into the financial reports, why it is important, and how to understand what you find there.

Nancy currently teaches in the Accounting Department of the Foster School of Business at the University of Washington. Prior to the UW she worked in Finance for Amazon, Inc. concentrating on fraud prevention and penetration testing of the Company’s systems. Previously Nancy was with KPMG Forensic serving clients in the Washington, D.C., New York and Seattle offices. She also completed a national rotational assignment with the KPMG Business School where she developed and managed the learning curriculums for Governance, Risk and Compliance as well as Leadership and Forensic.
Professional and Industry Experience
Throughout her career she has assisted clients in developing and testing their internal control systems, led external audit teams and financial investigations, designed internal audit programs, and deployed numerous corporate training programs. Nancy spent the early years of her career as an assistant state auditor in the Oregon Secretary of State, Audits Division, working with agencies such as the Oregon State Lottery.
